About M2S-2018

The M2S-2018 conference is the 12th in the series as an international event on superconductors and mechanisms of superconductivity held now every three years (The Materials and Mechanisms of Superconductivity and High-Temperature Superconductivity Conference). The first conference took place in 1988 in Interlaken in the wake of the discovery of high temperature superconductivity by the Nobel Prize winners Johannes Georg Bednorz and Karl Alexander Müller. The conference has since taken place in Palo Alto (1989), Kanazawa (1991), Grenoble (1994), Beijing (1997), Houston (2000), Rio de Janeiro (2003), Dresden (2006), Tokyo (2009), Washington(2012) and Geneva (2015).

The M2S-2018 conference is hosted by The National Lab for Superconductivity (NLSC), Institute of Physics (IOP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The Laboratory was established in April of 1991, after the joint appraisal and acceptance by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Science & Technology, it was honored with a title of the Key National Laboratory in 2000. The director of the Laboratory is Professor XingJiang Zhou and the chair of the Academic Committee is Professor Zhongxian Zhao. The NLSC has already established 6 research divisions which are focused on (i) low energy quasiparticle excitations and mixed-state properties of non-conventional superconductors; (ii) Research on the Growth and Physical Properties of High Temperature Superconductors under Micro- and Nano- scale and their heterostructures; (iii) Exploration of Novel Superconductors and Investigations on Related Mechanism of Superconductivity; (iv) Superconductor thin films and devices.; (v) Electronic and Optical Spectroscopy of Novel Superconductors; and (vi) Neutron scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance studies of strongly correlated materials. Currently, it includes almost all the aspects in the research for the superconductivity.

The Laboratory is developing into a worldwide influential advanced base for basic and applied research in the field of superconductivity. It will strengthen advanced experimental methods and compete with the strongest group in the world, choose the significant scientific and technologic problems in the field and make deeper research on them. On the other hand, it will also become an educational base for qualified personnel full of innovative ideas and strong motivation, including leading young scientists and qualified post-graduates. It will integrate the needs of the nation to make substantial contributions to the science and technology of superconductivity in China.
